Start with what you have
If you would rather not turn on the hob in the morning, breakfast does not need to become a project. Check the fridge and cupboard: do you have yoghurt, milk, a piece of fruit, cereal or granola? Choose one base and one topping. It is an easy way to decide what to make today without buying a whole set of ingredients for a single meal.
Three bowls to choose from
First, yoghurt and fruit. Try an apple, pear, banana or berries. Rinse fresh fruit under running water, cut it into small pieces and add it to the bowl. If the fruit is juicy, add it just before serving.
Second, yoghurt with a crunchy topping. Add a little of your usual cereal or granola at the last minute so it stays crisp for longer. If the granola is already sweet, taste the bowl before adding anything else.
Third, cereal and milk. Pour milk over ready-to-eat cereal and add a few pieces of fruit if you like. For a crunchy texture, assemble the bowl just before breakfast rather than the night before.
Change one ingredient
To keep breakfast from feeling repetitive, change just one detail: apple today, banana tomorrow; yoghurt one morning, milk the next. You can combine yoghurt and cereal or keep the bowl plain. When choosing packaged cereal, check the label and compare it with the products you usually buy. That lets you choose according to your own preferences, rather than the promises on the front of the box.
If you prepare ahead
You can wash the fruit and set out a bowl the night before. Keep dairy products and any assembled bowl in the fridge. The FDA advises that perishable food should not sit at room temperature for more than two hours; above 32 °C (90 °F), the limit is one hour. Add cereal or granola just before eating, and breakfast is ready without a hob or a long morning routine.
